Admissions Lottery FAQ's

How does admission to the school function? 

As a public school of choice, admission to the Mandela International Magnet School (MIMS) is through a lottery process. The lottery will take place 5:00 pm on March 3, 2017 and the deadline for submission of an application is 5:00 pm on February 24, 2017. Applications may be submitted anytime prior to 5:00 pm, February 24, 2017. Those students not selected in the initial lottery are placed on a numerical waiting list and are contacted as positions become available. Any applications that are submitted after February 26, 5:00 pm will be placed at the end of waiting list in the order they arrive.

For the lottery selection, current 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders may submit applications for a place in MIMS’ 2017-2018  7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade classes.  Our current 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th graders will move up to 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade and we will lottery in 50 new spaces for the 7th grade. The number of lottery positions for 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade depends on the number of current 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th grades who decide to leave the school.   Applications may be submitted at any time prior to the deadline either electronically or by hand. Electronic submissions are made by clicking on the following link, http://www.jotformpro.com/form/43074526040951, filling out the questionnaire and hitting the submit button. Your application will automatically be placed in one of the five regions in preparation for the lottery selection. Applications can also be filled out by hand and returned either in person or mailed to the main desk at the Santa Fe School District, 610 Alta Vista, Santa Fe, NM 87505. 

The lottery is executed in the following manner. Santa Fe is divided into five regions, one region for each school board member’s district. To ensure that each region of the city is represented equitably in the lottery, applications are sorted by the address of the applicant and placed into one of the regions accordingly.   On the date of the lottery, each of the five columns are sorted randomly and approximately the top 10 numbers in each of the five "zones" are chosen.  In this way, MIMS has institutionalized a highly balanced lottery which ensures diversity with respect to geography, socio-economic status, ethnicity, culture and language  

Admission Dates to remember: 

  • February 24, 2017: Applications deadline. Applications for admission that arrive after 5:00pm on February 26 will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list.
  • March 3, 2017: The Lottery. Five lotteries, in each of the five School Board member’s district will be held simultaneously.
  • Week of March 6, 2017: Families notified of lottery results as soon as possible
  • March 24, 2017: Confirmation of enrollment via email or written confirmation in person at the school. If confirmation is not received by 5:00pm on March 24 that place will be forfeited and the next number on the waiting list will be offered a place in the school.
