Admissions Lottery FAQ's

How does admission to the school function?

As a public school of choice, admission to the Mandela International Magnet School (MIMS) is through a lottery process. The lottery will take place 5:00 pm on March 2, 2018 and the deadline for submission of an application is 5:00 pm on February 16, 2018. Applications may be submitted anytime prior to 5:00 pm, February 16, 2018. Those students not selected in the initial lottery are placed on a numerical waiting list and are contacted as positions become available. Any applications that are submitted after February 16, 5:00 pm will be placed at the end of waiting list in the order they arrive.

For the lottery selection, current 6th, 7th, and 8th graders may submit applications for a place in MIMS’ 2018-2019  7th, 8th, and 9th grade classes.  Our current 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th graders will move up to 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade and we will lottery in 50 new spaces for the 7th grade. The number of lottery positions for 8th and 9th grade depends on the number of current 7th and 8th grades who decide to leave the school.
